The scholarship was the first endowed scholarship established by a WesternU College of Pharmacy faculty member and is intended for a student interested in a career in hospital or geriatric pharmacy practice. Dr. Diane Javier is the 4th recipient of the scholarship which was established in 2016. Previous recipients were Dr Haig Haig (2016), Dr. Gorby Singh (2017) and Dr. Meera Alshamali (2018).
Dr. Diane K. Javier received the Sam K. Shimomura Endowed Scholarship during the awards portion of the WesternU Commencement Dinner held at the Pasadena Convention Center. She was Co-Chair of the Pharmacy Essential Medical Spanish Team for 2015-2017 and served as tutor and facilitator for the course. In addition, she was involved with updating the course handbooks by incorporating appropriate new content from books and online sources. The course covers terminology, cultural competence and practice in counseling patients in Spanish. She is a native Spanish speaker originally from Peru.

The WesternU College of Pharmacy Class of 2019 celebrated at their Commencement Dinner on May 21, 2019 at the Pasadena Convention Center. A reception with appetizers and drinks was followed by dinner of steak, chicken or a vegetarian option. Then there was a toast to the Class by Dean Robinson and then presentations of awards and dancing. The dinner was generously supported by McKesson, California Pharmacists Association and Ralphs.
