Stephanie Lee, PharmD Candidate 2022
It has been an honor to attend a Tribute to Caring three years in a row. This event has always been a humbling night for me. It is a great experience to listen to Dr. Hamburg and Dr. Bond speak about their experience with the university and being a doctor with heart. I hope to continuously develop my clinical skills and give back to the community with heart.
Kim Vuong, PharmD Candidate 2022
As a first-time attendee to a Tribute to Caring, one of the things that stood out to me were this year’s honorees, Dr. Solomon Hamburg and Dr. Richard Bond. Both spoke of humanism as an important quality to have as a healthcare provider to connect with our patients. As such, both honorees have made a positive impact in various patient’s lives through this connection. Dr. Hamburg and Dr. Bond’s achievements and dedication to their patients inspires me to follow their example. Through acts of service and as a future pharmacist, I hope that I can make a positive impact on patients’ lives as much as our prestigious honorees.

Medication Counseling Assessment

11/6/2019

As part of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE), students practice and are assessed on their patient counseling skills.  One student out of a team of 6 or 7 students is randomly selected to play the pharmacist who counsels the patient, played by a fourth year student (Leeza Karakouzian).  Once the student is selected, the team is given a prescription and have two minutes to discuss what to counsel the patient on.  The student who is the pharmacist then counsels the patient.  Next the team huddles again and has one minute to add or correct the counseling session. The students are assessed based on rubric or check list of items to be covered as well as an overall communication score.  The key points the students need to cover are proper introduction and identification of patient, medication history, allergies, storage, indication, purpose, dose and clinical considerations such side effects, drug interactions, contraindications etc.  They were also required to do teach back and answer any questions the patient my have. The students did very well in general but were nervous, did not maintain good eye contact or act with confidence and authority. They also missed a few drug interactions, incorrect doses and side effects.  The students were assessed in this session by Dimittri Delevry, Fellow, and Sam Shimomura, Emeritus Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Administration.
