Long term care is a unique area of pharmacy which doesn’t have much interaction with patients. Taking a tour of Guardian they showed how they work with assisted living facilities to focus on making the patients feel at home. No Pyxis-like carts around the facility, but more furniture-like to hold medications. He also touched on some of the issues with the pharmacy being that med-techs aren’t allowed to administer medications and sometimes there are issues processing orders. I also found it very interesting that a bubble pack cost about $0.06 per pack. At that cost it seems almost odd that these aren’t used more often for the patient in terms of convenience. However, one major thing that jumped out to me was that Dr Lee Meyer mentioned that we need to stay up to date on laws and regulations. Go to Board of Pharmacy meetings and participate. I found this interesting because we tend to push law off to the side and it surprisingly has quite a bit of importance in terms of pharmacist involvement.
