OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) day is stressful and exciting for the student pharmacists taking the OSCE but also for the faculty, residents, staff, teaching rotation students and simulated patients (SPs) who administer the examination. The OSCEs are used to practice a new skill and to evaluate the competency of the student pharmacists to perform the skill. The OSCE occurs in the Clinical Skills Lab consisting of examination rooms with video cameras and one way windows. Students and patients are observed by the faculty evaluating the student either through a one-way window or through a video feed in a control room. The simulated patients are given a script to follow and the students are given the appropriate patient background information and a skill to demonstrate (eg educate the patient on how to administer an insulin injection). The faculty are given a rubric or checklist of things the student is expected to do (eg use teach back technique to insure the patient understands the counseling points). The faculty and simulated patients also evaluate the student pharmacist on communication skills. Students rotate to several different statations where they are evaluated in different skills. They students are given about 5-10 minutes per station. The station where they taught the SP to administer insulin was 9 minutes long. For more information about OSCEs at WesternU, see the article in the Summer 2012 issue of RxBound page 24 (page 26 in the expanded electronic version)

Career Day
WesternU had its annual career day on October 6, 2014. This interactive event allowed students to meet with various pharmacy employers mostly in the community setting. Representatives from pharmacies included Albertsons/Sav-On/Osco, Wal-Mart/Sam’s club, CVS, Rite Aid, Target, Walgreens, Ralph’s, Kaiser Permanente and the Indian Health Service. WesternU’s faculty member, Dr. James Scott, also had an informative booth for students interested in academia. Career day was split up into two halves. The first half was mainly for first, second and third year students who were looking for intern positions while the second half was reserved for employers to formally interview fourth year students.
A major concern most students had at career day was market saturation and although most employers admitted that Southern California was a saturated market, they assured students that opportunities existed beyond the SoCal regions. Another big topic was expanding pharmacist’s roles in healthcare. As of right now nothing is imminent but companies such as Sav-On and CVS said that they have programs in line to fully utilize pharmacists once California’s Board of Pharmacy specifies the limits for such roles.
As always, WesternU did a great job in organizing its annual career day for both students and employers.

Today, Kamal, Alana, and I helped Dr. Purva Patel’s health fair at Doctor’s Choice pharmacy in Upland, CA. It was a great experience to be a part of that. Kamal, Alana, and I were in charge of the blood pressure station. The interesting thing about this health fair is the fact that we all took the blood pressure readings manually. Most health fairs that I volunteered at used the machines. This is actually better because it allows us to be more proactive. The patients actually like it more because they know it is a more accurate reading and they feel like the machine is something they can just do at home. It was a fun experience meeting people from the Upland Chamber of Commerce and IR Patel from the Indian Pharmacist Association. I actually got a chance to talk to Manisha Patel, the district manager for CVS, as well. The overall experience was a great one.

Gamification of Education Faculty Development Seminar

On June 5, 2014, Miary Andriamiarisoa, Director of ITDL/Web Architech gave a faculty development seminar on "The Gamification of Education". Games are fun and often so engrossing that we lose all sense of time as we pursue the goal of winning the game. On the other hand, learning can often be boring and difficult to embrace. By combining the two, student may be better able to learn and enjoy the process. Dr Eunice Chung, Assistant Dean for Curricular Affairs, and Jerry Kellogg, ITDL Instructional Design Strategist has developed a game to teach the "200 Top Drugs" and 400 medical terms and their definitions and Dr David Pham is developing a game to teach diabetes. For more information on the topic go to: http://teach-tech.westernu.edu/virtual-arcade-pharmacy/
